Phoenicia Is Moving to Utah
Phoenicia Ship to Relocate to Utah in November
The Phoenicia, a remarkable full-scale replica of a 600 BC Phoenician ship, will soon begin its next chapter. After months of careful restoration in Montrose, Iowa, this historic vessel is scheduled to move to Utah in November 2025.
A Legacy of Exploration
The Phoenicia was originally constructed under the leadership of Captain Philip Beale, a former Royal Navy officer and adventurer whose vision was to demonstrate the global reach of ancient seafaring. Under his leadership, the ship successfully circumnavigated Africa (2008–2010) and later crossed the Atlantic, retracing ancient trade and migration routes.
In 2012, Phoenicia was sailed to London in time for the Summer Olympic Games, where it was celebrated as a symbol of endurance, skill, and human connection across cultures. Its move to Utah in 2025 will mark the ship’s second Olympic debut—this time looking forward to the 2034 Winter Olympics, when Utah will again welcome the world.
Utah: A Place to Inspire
Utah has been chosen as the new home for Phoenicia. The ship’s story resonates broadly: it speaks to those fascinated by Mediterranean history, ancient exploration, and cultural exchange. It also carries interest for certain faith-based communities who see it as part of larger traditions of migration and resilience.
While Utah is the destination, the permanent location for Phoenicia is still to be determined. Finding and securing the right site is a crucial next step, and one where broad community support will make all the difference.
A Vision for 2034
Looking ahead, the vision is for Phoenicia to become a gathering place for the world during the 2034 Winter Olympics. As Utah hosts visitors from every corner of the globe, Phoenicia can stand as a cultural centerpiece—linking the ancient and modern worlds, and reminding us that exploration, resilience, and human ingenuity transcend time and borders.
How the Community Can Help
The November move will be a milestone, but it will take a community effort to fully establish Phoenicia in its new home. Support is needed in several key areas:
Securing a Location – A site that is accessible, visible, and capable of hosting a cultural and educational destination.
Transportation & Assembly – Logistics and technical help for the move and reassembly in Utah.
Funding & Sponsorships – To cover moving costs, facilities, and long-term museum development.
Community Engagement – Helping share Phoenicia’s story and building networks of support.
Looking Ahead
Phoenicia is more than a ship; it is a living legacy of Captain Beale’s vision and of the ancient mariners who shaped world history. Its presence in Utah will inspire visitors of all backgrounds and serve as a unifying symbol when the world comes to the state in 2034.
